Abstract

Biobebavioral research is the study of the interrelationships among biological, psychosocial, behavioral, spiritual, and environmental factors. Biobehavioral research represents the holistic approach for understanding mind-body interactions, which is consistent with the philosophical foundation of nursing. The nature of biobehavioral research must be determined based on the nature of research inquiry, the type of health care issues to be investigated, population of interest, and the domain of health, to name a few. Further issues critical to biobehavioral research include the selection of appropriate biological parameters; optimal timing of measurements; consideration of clinical significance in biobehavioral inquiries; understanding complex interactions among various coexisting biobehavioral variables and investigating their interactions simultaneously; further attention to recovery patterns of altered biological responses in relation to psychosocial, behavioral, and environmental factors; recognition of individual differences; interdisciplinary collaborations; and integration of new genetics knowledge and skills. When appropriately designed and conducted, biobehavioral research can be a powerful tool to explore health-related issues, develop useful strategies for interventions, and to test the effectiveness of interventions in preventing diseases and maintaining and restoring the health of individuals.
